  • HYPOLUXO ISLAND

  • The island got its name in 1873 when Mrs. H. D. Pierce asked the Indians who were camping nearby what their name was for the lake. They replied "Hypoluxo," meaning "Water all around, no get out." The Pierces decided to adopt this name for the island. The lake of Lake Worth was originally a land-locked, fresh water lake, except for the times of high water, when an opening came in the ridge at the north end of the lake. Hypoluxo Island was the first place to be settled at the south end of the lake and the last to show growth and development.

There have never been any business establishments on the island and today it remains a lovely residential spot on Florida's Gold Coast. There were less than a dozen homes on the island until after World War II. Even today only about 289 families reside on Hypoluxo Island. The residents have kept as much of the jungle vegetation as possible, making it a place of natural beauty.

Until recent years the land east of the lagoon to the beach ridge was a mangrove swamp. This, coupled with the tropical vegetation on the island, made this area the closest thing in the Continental United States to local residents while soldiers were sent there to learn to live off the land before being sent to the Pacific Arena. Lantana, Manalapan, Hypoluxo, and Hypoluxo Island lie in Township 45 South, Range 43 East except for the part of Lantana and the island which lie north of Osborne/Lantana Road, which is the Township 44 South, Section 34.

Snuggled on the eastern shore of one of the fastest growing areas in the State and Nation, it remains a small and quiet community dedicated to maintaining an exceptional level of services, controlled development and a conservative approach to government.

The geographical configuration of the community is unique in that two separate areas exist, contiguous only by water. That portion along A-l-A between the Lantana Public Beach and the South Lake Worth Inlet, more commonly called Boynton Inlet, is the best known area because of travel along the main north south highway. Sharing Hypoluxo Island with the Town of Lantana, the more secluded area of Manalapan occupies about the southern one third of the Island and includes one of or possibly the oldest home in Palm Beach County, the Pierce residence built in 1870 when Palm Beach was still a part of Dade County.

According to a town survey in April, 1998 approximately 333 year round residents swell to a total population of 495 when seasonal or other non-resident homeowners are included. Only several housing units are rentals and the residential community includes only 4% land area designated as club and commercial. Manalapan has a Commission-Manager form of government housed at 600 South Ocean Boulevard. In addition to full police and fire services, the Town provides water to the residents of Manalapan and Hypoluxo from the municipal water plant located on U.S. Highway #1 in Hypoluxo.
